Oregon's Wine Country

Oregon's many rugged mountain valleys and the diversity of the climates/soil conditions that are found in these areas allow a wide variety of grapes to be grown. These valley's are home to many fine wineries and is sometimes called "America's Last Great Undiscovered Wine Region".

The wine industry began in Oregon in 1961 in the Umpqua Valley where three mountain ranges converge, creating a variety of micro-climates in the many sub-valleys. The first commercial planting of grapes was by HillCrest Vineyard located in the Melrose area of Roseburg and after it's initial success several new vineyards were born in the Umpqua Valley with many of the owners having worked for the HillCrest Vineyard. Today there are many vineyards throughout the state with more being planted by people from all over the US and the world, drawn to Oregon and it's wonderfully diverse winegrowing region.

The Umpqua Valley wineries create varieties of wine such as Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Merlot, Cabernet, Chardonnay, Syrah, Marechal Foch, Tempranillo, and Grenache. Wine tours of the region are popular, both self-driving and by bus. Maps and information can be obtained at the Roseburg Visitor & Convention Bureau.

The wine producing areas of Oregon include not only the Umpqua Valley but also the Rogue River Valley, Applegate Valley, Willamette Valley, Walla Walla and the Columbia Valley.
